Dale Inskeeptag:daleinskeep.com,2005:Post/61659772009-12-11T19:00:00-05:002019-12-13T16:04:49-05:00Surf Country Genre or Americana...a definition?

We've coined the term, 'Surf Country/Americana' to describe our music. The style we play is hard to pigeon hole into a category. Last month when I was in the Austin, Texas area, I picked up one of several great magazines that are published in Texas about music, particularly Texas music. In the magazine, "The MusicFest Magazine" that is getting folks primed for the great music festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado to kick off the new year January 4th -9th, it had an article that was talking about 'Americana' music. The article was written by Al Moss and I'll share some of his words here to help folks understand the challenges of labeling music.
"One thing that seems to be quite predominant in the world of Americana music is that the artists more often than not write a significant amount of their music, as opposed to the more mainstream world in which many artists record music written by 'outside' writers. Also the majority of successful Americana artists perform live on a regular basis. Addistionally, Americana music is that it is genreally more organic than the more mainstream/pop music world...
Even then, what Americana is to me or to anyone else is going to differ. The same goes for the radio world; what Americana is will differ from station to station based on regionalism, listeners' expectations, as well as to the station programmer's determination from each album (whether or not the music fits their mental idea of the sound they have in mnd for their station). Duke Ellington once said that there are two kinds of music - "good music and bad music." Much of Americana falls under the good category. Ultimately, what is or isn't Americana is really decided by the listener."
I hope this helps explain why we call our music, 'Surf Country/Americana.'
Happy Holidays!

Carmen is back from India, then he'll be moving to Homer, AK on the 23rd of March. Fred was cool enough to let Carmen come on down and play the next two weeks with us (for old time's sake!) Thanks, 'Fret'!

I just got hooked up on facebook...I have to admit, I had a blast looking up friends from the past and the present.
Also, I want to thank the great guys who have been playing in The Dale Inskeep Band. David Ford has been incredible on electric guitar. Fred Corbett and Bill Berrian both are great bass players. Tom Beckstrom and Mike Carrillo are both insane on the drums. What an honor it is to have these great musicians to play with...Thanks guys...y'all rock!
We've got the final mix on the new album and have been really digging it. We're a bit slow on the art/cover/etc...but we'll have it figured soon, then keep you posted when it will be released. I know you'll love it!
Thanks for all the support!

The weather has been incredible here on the South Coast of Oregon. With so much of the country freezing, it's been extra nice to have sunny days in the 60's.
Tomorrow night is Carmen's last time playing with us for some time. He is off to India, then to Alaska and we wish him the best on his travels.
Fred Corbett, who is an incredible bass and banjo player, will be joining us next week. I have always respected Fred's ability and professionalism and look forward to playing music with him in the future.
Thanks to everyone who has been coming down on Thursday evenings at the High Tide...there is a special menu for Thursday nights and we always have a great time. I hope to see you soon!

I often think of all the things I am so thankful for as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday. I wanted to take a moment and thank all of the folks who have been visiting my website and checking out my music. Every month, since I started my website, the number of visits has grown. A year ago, I had about 600 visits in November and I'll have over 3000 visits this month. For me, it's never been about making money for my music, but rather sharing my music with others. It is so great that more and more folks are listening to the music I write and play...I am truly blessed.
Thanks Everyone...

We had a great trip to Austin and WImberley, Texas. The weather, food, drink, music, and people were all fantastic, or as David says, Super Fantastic. Thanks to Dan and Denese for hosting the gig at the Wimberley Inn...a great place to go. Thanks to all the great folks in Wimberley for coming and listening to us. We enjoyed ourselves.
Mark and Andre from The Congress House were great to work with on our new CD project. We cut 13 songs that we have not previously recorded and are anxious to here them after they are mixed and mastered. We think it is going to be great. I think it's going to be called "Three Hands on the Wheel"...
We'll miss Dave tonight at the High Tide, but the full band will be back on our regular schedule next week.
Come on down...

Come on down and hear us on Halloween at the High Tide...Costume or not, it will be a great Friday night!
We're getting pretty excited about our upcoming trip to Austin and Wimberley, Texas. We're going to play at the Wimberley Inn in Wimberley on Sunday, November 9th and take donations to help one of the Collings Guitar workers who was hit in a car wreck. We're planning on having a great time seeing some good friends and recording a new CD with Mark Hallman of The Congress House.
See Y'all Soon...

We had a great time this past weekend at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. There was so much great talent in one place it was amazing.
Thanks to all the folks in Arcata (Humbolt County) who listened to us play our music last Thursday at Humbolt Brews. We had a great time sharing out tunes with all the great folks of Arcata who were there to hear us...what a great crowd. Thanks, Andy for having us! If you ever get a chance to visit Humbolt Brews, it's a great place to hang and they have an incredible beer selection...I surely enjoyed the Hemp Ale.
Come see us at Octoberfish this Saturday at the Old Charleston School.

Thanks to all who came to listen to us at the Charleston Seafood Festival. It was great to see all the regular faces around Charleston. The cool, foggy weather made it a great place to get away from the triple digit temperatures in the valley.

Don't miss August 21st at the High Tide as it will be Danny's last gig with us before he moves to Eugene. He'll be back from time to time, but I know he'll do great in Eugene!

Meitaki to all my friends in the Cook Islands for another great visit. I've been in LA a couple days, Bend, Oregon for a week and while it's great to get away, it's even better getting home. I used my new Kioloa paddle today in some fun, small surf and had a great couple sessions while the family hung at the beach. I love Coos Bay, Oregon! I'm sitting in with the band for the Little 'Ole Opry tonight on mandolin and have a fairly easy-going week.
The 17th of July we had a record night at the High Tide as a part of the Oregon Coast Music Festival...Thanks to all the many folks who came out to support us and the OCMA! You rock!
Get ready for the Tunnel Point Party coming up...email me and I'll give you directions if you've never been before...One of a kind event!

Thanks to all who came out to Rogers Zoo last night...we had a great time and played for almost 4 hours. We appreciate everyone who pitched in the cover charge that we gave to Danny, our drummer, for his college fund...he got a nice bit of cash last night.
I've had more visits to my website in May than any other month since I've had it up. Over 1600 visits from all over the world...thanks to all of you in Belgium, Germany, UK, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands for checking out my stuff...sometimes I forget that the www means World Wide Web. We are looking forward to when we get a chance to play for y'all in Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand....It may not be too far off in the future.
I'm continually blessed to have the great guys who make up The Dale Inskeep Band share my music...the chemistry couldn't be better. You guys rock!

Meitaki Maata means Thanks Much in Maori. I've got my plane tickets for my annual trip to visit all my bros in Rarotonga and Aitutaki, Cook Islands. If you've never been there, you're missing something...
I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has listened to, bought, inquired about, etc...regarding my new CD, Smile & Pretend. They have been selling well and I've sent several off to Europe, especially Belgium and UK for radio stations and promotions. Also, OASIS, which is the company I've used to put my music into production, asked me if they could use Smile & Pretend for their advertising materials...of course I faxed the agreement straight-away!
I've also seen a significant increase in the visits to my website from all over the globe...Thanks for checking into things and enjoy the music...I make sure all my CDs are available to listen to all the way through for free on my website...it's always an honor to share my music with folks!
I'm taking it a bit easy this holiday weekend trying to get caught up on some stuff, but will be playing on our regular Thursday night at the High Tide and at Rogers Zoo on Saturday the 31st to close out the month. We're charging $5 at the door at Rogers, then giving it all to my drummer, Danny, who is working hard to go to college....and, it's his birthday...Come on down and have some fun with us!
Thanks again to everyone...or in Maori....

We've finally had a couple nice weather days, but they have been few and far between. It's been great playing music for y'all lately with all the boys joining in. What a great group of guys to be playing with...all good vibes. We'll miss having Dave with us next week at Waxers, but Carmen, Danny and Tom will be playing.

We had a great turnout last night at Roger's Zoo and raised heaps of money for the SMART reading program. Thanks to everyone who came out to listen to the music and support SMART.
Next week we'll be at the High Tide on Thursday night and at Sozos on Saturday night. Carmen will be in Ohio on Saturday, so Danny will play the Congas and Bongos, Dave will play bass and I'll play my acoustic guitar. Come on down and listen to the tunes and enjoy some great chowder, a tasty dessert or a nice cup of mocha!
Once again, Thanks for all the support!

I had a great time over in Bend with the family...relaxation, music, swimming, and snowboarding. Bippo and I wrapped up our monthly gigs at The Summit in Bend, but it looks like we'll be back for a Saturday night in May...I'll keep you posted.
Danny, Carmen and I did the Bakersfield Telecaster Trio last night and had a great time...A nice full house again. Thanks, Y'all!
Next Thusday at the Tide, we'll be joined by Dave Ford and have some belly dancers during an intermission...Cool! Then, on Saturday night, we'll be playing at Rogers Zoo for a SMART Reading benefit...$5 at the door will go ALL to SMART Reading in our area...Also, you can purchase my Cd's for $15 and $10 of that will go to SMART Reading too.
I've added a few pictures on the site and all the lyrics are in place for my Saltwater Cowboy Album...Smile and Pretend is in the works and I'll be receiving the proofs of the layout on Tuesday!
Again, I surely appreciate all the support from all the great folks! Meitaki Maata!

Thanks to all the folks who have come out to the High Tide the last few weeks. We've had a full house on Thursday nights and many familiar faces. My new CD will be ready within a month as the artwork and mastered copy is now in production.
We've got some fun gigs coming up. Check the calendar and Come On Down!

This time of year is unique on the Oregon coast with pockets of sunshine... still pretty cold...plenty of rain...a mix of swells; It can feel like treading water in paradise...only, wondering how long will it last?
Every Thursday, though, we get a great group of folks out to hear us play...even when I'm tired or have things on my mind, we start to play music and after a few sips of beer, "It's All Good!"
Meitaki Maata for the support!

It was a great time playing for y'all at the Summit in Bend on Saturday night. Thanks for the great treatment, JC, who is the bartender that I've known for several years. That job is like an all night aerobics instructor!
It's always a special pleasure to play music with my good friend Bippo. He just lost his brother yesterday and found out right when we finished playing. My thoughts and prayers are with Bippo and his family.
I tried to get to the mountain this morning to ride some pow, but there was a bad wreck and after close to an hour of waiting in the traffic line, I turned around and headed back to Coos Bay. I was in four wheel drive with my siped and studded tires almost the entire way back to the coast and saw 13 wrecks...CRAZY WEATHER.
I hope to see y'all back at the Summit on February 16th!
Enjoy the snow and thanks again!

I just returned from NAMM with Collings guitars and surely appreciate all the people who make them who they are. Not only do they make the finest instruments, but they tolerate my sometimes, over-the-top antics...

I'll be at the NAMM show with Collings Guitars this week. If you're around the show, stop by the Collings booth and say hello.
I'll be playing at the High Tide with Carmen and Danny on the 24th and in Bend at The Summit with Bippo on the 26th.

Steve and Carol, who own the High Tide Cafe, put on a splendid display of grub and positive vibe tonight.
I love supporting Charleston, Oregon.
I love playing music for folks.
I love sharing my music with the family of the High Tide Cafe and their great customers who know good food and a great atmosphere.
It sure made my heart warm up when I heard my new CD, "Smile and Pretend", play on their sound system tonight and I saw folks singing along...Thanks to y'all for listening to and being a part of the music I create. It wouldn't happen without you!

This Thursday at the High Tide Cafe, Dave Ford will join me on bass. Danny Richardson who is a great drummer, will be joining me on Thursday nights from now on. We'll miss Carmen this week, but he'll be back with Danny and me in two weeks after I return from the NAMM show in Anaheim, California.
Come on Down! Snow Cap Ale is on tap....you don't want to miss that!

Thanks to everyone who packed the house on New Year's Eve. It was a blast playing with the four-piece and playing electric guitar.
I was especially pleased that Gary came out...He's kicking some cancer ass at the moment and I know he'll be back in the water soon!
Today is the 15 year anniversary of the day Bill Weaver and I had a nice visit from a 17 foot Great White Shark in Coos Bay...Time goes by way too fast!
I received the final master of my new CD. Mark Hallman at the Congress House did a great job with that. My bro, Nellie, is working on some art for the album, then it will go into production. A special Thank You to Angela and Kevin for the tracks they sang/played on the album. The first burned copy of the master went to my friend, Gary Smither...2008 is your year, bro!
Thanks again to y'all for the support and listening to the songs! Happy New Year!

We'll be playing my original music in the four-piece set up...Carmen on bass, Dave on electric guitar and Tom on drums!

Thanks to all the folks who stuck around and listened to my music at the Summit Saloon and Stage.
My good bro, Bippo, played along with his big mama bass and we had a great time. The crew at the Summit are a bunch of great folks...we'll be playing one Saturday a month for the next few months....we'll keep you posted.
Thanks again!

I'll be off from my regular Thursday night fun time at the High Tide Cafe on Thursday the 20th. I'll be in Bend, Oregon doing some snowboarding.

I received the first mixed disc from Mark Hallman of The Congress House Studio and it turned out great. I'm listening to it a bunch and there will be a couple minor tweeks to the mix, then it will be mastered and go into production. It should be done and ready around the first of the year...maybe sooner, but there is no rush.
This album will have a similar, authentic feeling as Saltwater Cowboy, however, I played some fiddle tracks and my friends Angela and Kevin put some vocal and standup bass tracks down too.
I am looking forward to sharing with y'all!

The recording of my new Cd, 'Smile and Pretend' went great. Mark Hallman, at the Congress House Studio in Austin, is a great guy with awesome ears.
This time around with all new tunes, there was a bit of fiddle added that I played and I want to thank
Angela Thomas for her beautiful voice on several tracks and Kevin Fox for his great stand-up bass playing on a handful of tracks. It was a long, but great day!
Now, Mark will be putting his talents into the mixing and mastering process of the CD. I'm excited to hear it myself.
I'll keep you posted on the release date!
I always love to go to Austin, but I also always love to get back to the Oregon coast to rest up!
Hanging out, then I'm gone!

On November 8th, I'll be working with Mark Hallman at The Congress House in Austin, Texas to record a new CD. It will include all new, original tracks with a couple new surprises. The Congress House is an incredible recording studio with a great reputation.
I'll keep you posted on the release...

We're off to a busy month of October with our regular High Tide gig, the Coos Art Museum Auction, and the Cancer benefit at the Mill Casino all the first week.
Octoberfish should be a blast on the 13th with Deschutes' Jubelale on tap and great fresh seafood. There will be a lot of different folks performing and it will be great.
We will be playing on Wednesday night, Halloween, instead of Thursday at the High Tide to have a spooky cool time. We will be joined by Tom Beckstrom on drums and I'll be busting out the electric instruments. Come on down and join us!

Dale Inskeeptag:daleinskeep.com,2005:Post/61659252007-09-09T20:00:00-04:002019-12-13T16:04:47-05:00Happy September!

We had a great time playing for the 1st Community Information Fair last Saturday. There was a great turnout of folks who seemed to enjoy themselves. They gave away about 300 burgers, and the weather was incredible.
Carmen will be in Ohio when we play for Octoberfish, so we're excited to have Dave Ford play bass and Tom Beckstrom play drums with us. It should be a great time!

Stan and Kris tied the knot on Saturday afternoon and a great party followed at the High Tide Cafe. It was an honor to share our music. Thanks for the great tequila and shot glasses and enjoy your honeymoon!

The 2007 Annual Tunnel Point party was a great time. Check out a few new pictures in the photo section...Yep, Carmen lost his pants but kept the pasta out of them.
The place was full of truly great folks and we really appreciate everyone listening to our music and all the nice compliments.
Thanks to everyone!!!

Dale Inskeeptag:daleinskeep.com,2005:Post/61659222007-08-04T20:00:00-04:002019-12-13T16:04:47-05:00We'll miss you, Ciara!

We played tonight (last night) at Gooney's to a packed house to wish Ciara a great farewell to Seattle. Ciara has been an awesome waitress at the High Tide, has done great work for the Coos Bay Art Museum, and has been a special ingredient to the cool vibe at Gooney's.
We played a surprise party for Ciara tonight (last night) and Ciara was relieved of duty when we started playing. It was a packed house with several ex-students from when I was the Vice-Principal at the high school. Thanks for all the tequila shots and good times. I sure appreciate all the folks hanging out and listening to the music. We had a great time and it was a great way to send Ciara off to her next chapter of life in Seattle. Maybe we'll have to get some flannel shirts, look at the ground when we play, and add some distortion to our acoustic instruments so we can play some Acoustic Surf Country Grunge and do some gigs in Seattle?????
Thanks to all of you who came out, listened, smiled, and sang along.
Kia Manuia,
Dale

I wrote this new song to sum up my trip to Austin. It's all based on a true story...honest.
Chorus
It's raining hard in Texas, Lightning fills the sky
I'm not sure I'll make it to my plane in time to fly
The BBQ and wine stains are alive on my new shirt
I hope we make it one more night with no one getting hurt.
A Mexican martini, crawfish etoufee
The music's pretty loud, I can't hear a word you say
I'm driving 'round, I'm lost again and I don't have a clue
How to get off this damn highway, now what do I do?
Chorus
Open mic, a cowboy sings a little bit off key
More Tito's handmade vodka and a beer for Bobby Z
We order up some pizza and watch the music play
Thinking we should pull the cord so he'd have no more to say
Chorus
I went up to Lake Travis, Todd Snider sang his song
All the drunk people in the pool, they tried to sing along
It you can't beat 'em, join 'em, so I bought another drink
The Patron and Grand Marnier made it easier to think
Chorus
The Red Eyed Fly and Hilton are worlds apart you know
A black t-shirt and nose ring to dress right for the show
I'll take the Continental Club and order another round
And not worry how I'll make it back to my hotel downtown
Chorus

Dale Inskeeptag:daleinskeep.com,2005:Post/61659202007-07-29T20:00:00-04:002019-12-13T16:04:47-05:00Back from Austin

I'm home and recovering from all the fun, mexican maritnis, Shiners, and Tito's Handmade Vodka. The Collings guitar folks are awesome and once again had some great parties. I was lucky enough to enjoy some Salt Lick BBQ with Robert Earl Keen and get a Texas history lesson from his wife, Kathleen. The summer NAMM show was mellow, but cool. I couldn't believe the lightning shows in Austin this year...a record July for rain...unreal.
I was hanging out, then I was gone....I loved the good times but I was glad to get back home.
See you soon...
Dale

Dale Inskeeptag:daleinskeep.com,2005:Post/61659142007-07-08T20:00:00-04:002019-12-13T16:04:47-05:00Going to Austin

I won't be playing at the High Tide on July 26th as I'll be in Austin, Texas for several music events, as well as plenty of Shiner Bock and Mexican Martinis.
Don't worry, I've been to Austin before AND I've just read Kinky Friedman's, "The Great Psychadelic Armadillo Picnic...A walk in Austin."
For example:
"y'all" is singular
"all y'all" is plural
"all y'all's" is plural possesive
